About Laser Proctology

What Is Laser Proctology?

Laser proctology is a subspecialty of colorectal surgery that uses targeted laser energy to treat conditions of the anus, rectum and lower bowel — without the need for large incisions or hospitalisation.

Conditions like piles, fissures and fistulas have traditionally been treated with open surgery, which involves significant post-operative pain, risk of complications, and weeks of recovery. Laser procedures change this entirely. The laser precisely seals blood vessels, closes fistula tracts, and treats tissue without harming surrounding structures.

💦 Why Laser?
🏥
Same-Day Discharge
Most laser procedures are daycare — patients go home the same day, typically within a few hours of the procedure.
🐯
Significantly Less Pain
Laser energy is precise and gentle on surrounding tissue, resulting in far less post-operative pain than conventional surgery.
🔂
Faster Recovery
Most patients return to work and daily activities within 2–5 days, compared to 2–4 weeks with open surgery.
🔬
No Open Wound
The laser seals as it treats — no open cuts, no stitches, and no wound dressing needed post-procedure.
The Difference

Laser vs Traditional Surgery

Traditional open surgery for piles or fistula has been the standard for decades — but it comes with a high cost in pain, recovery time and risk of complications.

Laser procedures achieve the same clinical outcome with a fraction of the recovery burden. For patients with busy lives — or those who have been putting off treatment due to fear of surgery — laser proctology changes the equation entirely.

The Journey

How Does Laser Proctology Work?

From initial consultation to full recovery, the laser proctology pathway is designed to be smooth, fast and patient-centred.

1
Consultation
A proctologist reviews your symptoms, performs a clinical examination and recommends the most suitable procedure for your grade and type of condition.
2
Pre-Procedure Prep
Simple pre-op instructions are provided. Most procedures require only light local or spinal anaesthesia — no general anaesthetic needed.
3
Laser Procedure
The laser is applied precisely to the target tissue. The procedure typically takes 15–30 minutes with minimal bleeding and no open wound.
4
Recovery & Follow-up
Patients are discharged the same day. A follow-up at 1–2 weeks ensures proper healing. Most resume daily activities within days.

Your Questions Answered

Frequently Asked Questions

Is laser surgery painful? +
Laser proctology procedures are performed under local or spinal anaesthesia, so there is no pain during the procedure. Post-operatively, most patients experience only mild discomfort that is well-managed with oral medication — far less than traditional open surgery.
How long is the recovery period? +
Most patients return to their normal daily activities within 2–5 days. You will be discharged the same day as your procedure. Full tissue healing typically takes 2–3 weeks, compared to 4–6 weeks with conventional open surgery.
Is laser treatment a permanent cure for piles? +
Laser Haemorrhoidoplasty (LHP) has excellent long-term results. Combined with dietary changes and proper lifestyle modification, the recurrence rate is very low. Grade 2 and 3 internal haemorrhoids respond particularly well to laser treatment.
What is FiLaC and when is it used? +
FiLaC (Fistula-tract Laser Closure) is a sphincter-preserving technique for anal fistula. A radial laser fibre is passed through the fistula tract and delivers energy to close it from inside out — without cutting the anal sphincter muscles, protecting continence.
Who is a good candidate for laser proctology? +
Most patients with Grade 2 or 3 haemorrhoids, chronic anal fissures, low or complex anal fistulas, or pilonidal sinus are candidates for laser treatment. A clinical examination by a specialist is needed to confirm suitability based on grade and anatomy.
How do I find a qualified laser proctologist? +
Look for a surgeon with specific training in laser proctology — not just a general surgeon who offers laser as an add-on. The specialist should be able to offer LHP, FiLaC, SiLaC and laser fissurectomy. You can use our Find a Specialist directory to locate verified laser proctologists across Pakistan.
